My Scuttle Fly colonies
Megaselia scalaris is now ready in the lab for research. I am currently collaborating with a student on the acute effect of mutagens on M. scalaris based on male and female adult characteristics. The rearing method was based on my previous research as published in Zuha & Omar (2014). Although the technique was quite simple (M. scalaris was so easy to keep in the lab), there were some issues required attention. I am trying to avoid overcrowding of adult colonies and at the same time avoiding the presence of parasitoids that ovipositing the pupae. To obtain adequate numbers of M. scalaris eggs for research, I introduced beef liver’s exudate one day earlier as protein source for the females.
